WORLD PAIRS SEMI FINAL 1

No shocks in this meeting as the three favourites filled the rostrum positions and cruised into the World Pairs Final.  Luke Treadwell led the way brilliantly for Scotland, topping off his display by winning a run-off for top spot, with the decision to bring in Scott Bridges as a reserve paying dividends as all of their trio contributed points.  Poland turned in a very balanced performance as both Irzyk and Kryznowek hit double figures while Russia also impressed and never looked like going out.  Behind them Germany finished in 4th place and then had to check on results in the second Semi before discovering that their 19 point total was enough to see them progress to the Final.

Hungary had Fekete in fine form, scoring an impressive 15 points, but failed to provide enough support as his partners could add just a single point between them in the meeting.  Finland, riding on their home circuit, made a good start but faded as the meeting progressed and just 3 points from their final races saw them fall short despite solid displays from both Helinen and Niemi.  Italy had a similar tale to that of Hungary with not enough support provided to their top man, Tabaglio, who scored double figures.

 WORLD PAIRS SEMI FINAL 2

No problems for the tournament favourites England in the second Semi as both Liam Reay (15) and Hayden Wood (9+3) scored well to see them finish clear of the field and reach the World Pairs Final.  Behind them were a couple of slightly, although not completely, surprising qualifiers in the shape of the Czech Republic and host nation for this meeting the Netherlands.  Milan Stajner produced a qualify performance for the Czechs with Tibor Nemecek providing just enough support to see them progress despite fading in the second half of the meeting.  Abe Zevenbergen and Henk Knapke delighted the home crowd by both scoring consistently throughout the meeting to seal the final qualiyfing place ahead of some historically bigger speedway nations.

Denmark took 4th spot but paid for not providing enough support to top man Henrik Hansen as their 18 point total saw them miss out to Germany in the race to be the top scoring 4th placed side.  The American pair both scored solidly but neither could register more than a race win each and that lack of power at the top end proved costly.  If the failure of the side who finished 3rd in 2015 was a shock that was nothing compared to that of Norway, champions in 2014/15 and twice runners-up in the competition.  Hans E Bergestol rode well to score double figures but neither of his partners could do any better than a point and the World Pairs powerhouse nation were left down in 6th place.  The side who brought up the rear in this meeting would also have expected to do much better but 7 points from Erik Davidsson and 6 from Hasse Blomqvist left Sweden well short of extending their involvement in this year's pairs competition.
