WORLD UNDER 21 FINAL

Just when it seemed that this meeting was settling into any sort of rhythm there seemed to be a shock with several riders looking likely challengers before JAKUB BARAN and MIKHAIL FEDERENKO finally made it to a title deciding run-off.  The young Polish rider took the honours - amazingly the first Pole to ever win the title!  Federenko was disappointed, after battling back from dropping 2 points in his first heat, but this result is further confirmation of the real progress he has made this season.  Defending champion FILLIPPE CHONG made a brave attempt to retain his title but dropped points before the interval and had to settle for the final rostrum spot.

Hans Benkarth impressed greatly in hitting double figure to come 4th overall and the 19 year old will be highly fancied for the title next season as the highest finisher who will still be eligible.  Hasse Blomqvist was somewhat unfortunate to be a faller in a race which he could potentially have won to give himself a shot at a rostrum place.  Jack Hagen looked a likely contender early on but he faded although, like Benkarth, he will be back and surely among the front runners next season.  The top half of the scoreboard was completed by Norway's Bjorn Haagensen and Craig Caffrey of Scotland who were both consistent throughout.  Although not amongst the front runners in this Anders Solberg, Gote Nordvall and Janis Viyups are all eligible to compete at this level next season so will hope to be back and challenging higher up the field.
