WORLD UNDER 21 SEMI FINALS |
The top 3 from last season's final are all back for one last, as the trio are all 20 so will be ineligible next year, attempt in the competition this time round after making progress from these meetings. None of the other big favourites fell by the wayside so it promises to be a cracking final showcasing the best young talent in the world right now. Of the final 16 eleven will be competing at junior level for the last time so will want to go out with a bang. A quartet of 19 years olds have also made it and in Benkarth, Hagen, Nordvall and Solberg they all look capable of pushing for at least a rostrum spot if they hit form on the day. The youngest rider in the final field will be surprise packet Janis Viyups from Latvia; the 18 year old has found life a little tough since moving the join Falmouth in the UK but confirmed his potential with a great performance in the first Semi Final. |
World Under 21 Semi Final 1 |
There were no major shocks in terms of the favourites for this meeting as leading Under 21 stars Anders Solberg, Jakub Baran and Jack Hagen filled the rostrum places to make good progress to the final. Boris Kravchuk, 3rd in last year's final, started with a blank but recovered well to make it through with no major problems. |
Behind them Axel Johannessen and young Welshman Rhodri Szczygiel both reached double figures to qualify. Ian Jacques, of South Africa, started with a win in heat 2 and held his nerve to be a bit of a surprise qualifier for the final as he finished 7th. The last place in the final was taken by Latvian rider Janis Viyups who scored points throughout to reach 7 and the 18 year old looks a potential star of the future. Of those that didn't make it Leo McFarlane was slightly unlucky to suffer a fall and more was perhaps expected of Polish duo Klecha and Aranowski but neither found any consistency on the day. |

World Under 21 Semi Final 2 |
As with the first Semi Final the leading places were filled by the pre-meeting favourites although in the end just 4 points separated the riders from 1st right down to 11th. Highly fancied Hans Benkarth won the meeting with Hasse Blomqvist, 2nd in last year's Under 21 competition, and Gote Nordvall behind him on the rostrum. Norway's Bjorn Haagensen also hit double figures to make relatively comfortable progress. Defending champion Fillippe Chong had a mixed meeting with a couple of bad rides meaning he needed his final heat win to be sure of progress but he showed his class to race away for the vital points. Mikhail Federenko has burst onto the scene this season and was making good progress before a 4th ride engine failure left him looking over his shoulder a little but his second machine proved good enough to see him pick up a point and reach the final. |
Norbert Pakiet scored steadily throughout to reach a second Under 21 final, adding impressively to his progress to this season's GP Challenge Semis also. The last place provided somewhat of a surprise when Craig Caffrey, who had started with a blank and not won a heat at that stage, raced away in a 3 man run-off to complete the final 16. Behind him in the run-off were Kenni Algreen and England's wonderkid Ray France. France had looked like qualifying, with 7 points at the interval, before fading as the meeting went on but at just 17 years of age he has plenty of time to return and challenge in future seasons. Scotland's Brett Harkins also put up a good battle but starting and finishing with last places meant he just missed out on being involved in the crucial run-off by a single point. |
